New exhibition opens: First Encounter. Greenlanders in Ísafjörður in 1925

Image

Greenlanders had hardly ever been seen in Iceland, but in 1925 just under 90 of them came on a visit to Ísafjörður. This exhibition reveals how this visit had its roots in a quarrel between Denmark and Norway concerning control over part of East Greenland, how the visitors were received, how much attention the visit gained, and what consequences it had for future relations between Iceland and Greenland.

The Exhibition will be in Veröld – House of Vigdís, from 17 January until 30 June 2019, and in the National and University Library of Iceland.

Exhibition Opening is in Veröld – House of Vigdís, Thursday 17 January at 4 pm. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome.
