RANNÍS awards a project grant to RomIs: A history and ethnography of Roma in Iceland

Today, RANNÍS awarded a grant to the project RomIs: A history and ethnography of Roma in Iceland, led by Sofiya Zahova.

The 3-year RomIs project has two overarching goals: to provide the first ever comprehensive historical account of Romani presence in Iceland, and to look ethnographically into the contemporary Roma community in Iceland, considering the perspective of Roma. This research pivots on an innovative collaboration between the University of Iceland, the Reykjavík Municipality, and the Roma community in Iceland.

The exciting news were announced today, on 14th January, when many Balkan Roma communities, following the old-style Julian calendar, celebrate the new year (festivity called Vasilitsa or the Day of Vassili).
